The Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad was incorporated on March 31 in 1897. This north-south route from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River was previously known as the New Albany & Salem Railroad (1847) and then as the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railroad (1859).

In 1882, LNA&C started using the nickname "Monon" in its timetables. The road's two main lines intersected at that town in northwestern Indiana. "Monon" derives from Potawatomi Indian words that meant "swift running". In 1956, the railroad officially added "Monon" to its corporate name.

Southern Indiana is renowned for its quarries that produce high-quality architectural limestone. The Empire State Building, the Pentagon, the National Cathedral, the Washington Monument, and thousands of other landmarks were built with slabs of Indiana limestone that began their journeys on the Monon.
