On the CP, coal moves west from customers like the Elk Valley Coal Corporation in southeastern British Columbia over Rogers Pass. The entire CP Western Canadian coal operation is based on unit coal trains moving across the CP railroad network in a continuous loop, from origin to destination and back again.
Keeping trains moving through one of the most inhospitable transportation environments on earth takes the commitment of hundreds of Canadian Pacific employees, who match ingenuity with sheer hard work and determination. This determination is echoed by Canadian Pacific's Coal Transportation Service Team. In Canada and in key coal centers in the U.S., the coal team's primary focus is meeting customer needs with innovative solutions.
Through the CP's wholly owned Soo Line Railroad Company subsidiary, Canadian Pacific operates in six states in the U.S. Midwest. The U.S. coal franchise consists entirely of thermal coal movements within two large distinct market segments: Western Coal and Illinois Basin Coal.
CP receives Powder River Basin coal from BNSF or UP in unit trains for delivery to electric generating stations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Western Canada. CP also moves Illinois Basin Coal from mines south of Terre Haute, IN to local utilities as well as industrial coal-burning facilities in surrounding states. (SOURCE: CANADIAN PACIFIC RR - 2010.
