US NAVY #121343 is sublettered for Naval Ammunition Depot-Earle, New Jersey, a major WW II USN facility. The roadnumber 121343 is reference to the December 13, 1943 activation date for NAD-Earle. The facility was originally served by the Central RR of NJ/CNJ RR station at Eatontown, NJ. After base construction were completed, rail service connections began in the vicinity of Colts Neck, NJ...again on the CNJ. Named after Rear Admiral Ralph Earle, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance during World War I, the Station was commissioned on December 13, 1943 as the Naval Ammunition Depot Earle. At Pearl Harbor it was a bit different. US NAVY #51308 is sublettered for Naval Ship Yard - Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a major USN facility. The roadnumber 51343 is reference to the May 13, 1908 date when the United States Congress approved legislation creating Navy Yard Pearl Harbor and authorized $3 million for its construction. The facility, being on an island in the Pacific Ocean, was never directly connected to any US mainland railroad. However, the original operation of the Pearl Harbor facility was a coaling station for US Navy ships. To allow timely movement of coal and materials, NSY-Pearl Harbor had an on-base US Navy railroad. Locomotives and railcars were lettered for the US Navy and the Pearl Harbor base. In 2008, the US Navy celebrated the 100th Birthday of NSY-IMF Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
