***NJHI-RAILERS featured in O GAUGE RAILROADING magazine, January, 2009 issue - GREAT STORY and PHOTOS!!! *********
My family has spent many hours during multiple visits to this simply fantastic train layout. It is so large that it takes more than one visit to see and appreciate all the details. And...the clubmembers are very helpful and truly enjoy explaining their railroad.
Recently the club made a short video of a double-headed (2) steam locomotive powered freight train pulling 99 reefer cars through the helix above Hirailerville. It is simple awesome...
The subway line has now been 'ELEVATED' to a new height...yes there is now an 'L' subway over the streets of HiRailerville!! And...even more scenery has been extended to include more mountains towering over expanded trackage, the carnival is now in full operation, multiple trains arriving/departing the new passenger ststion, underground subway system now running on multiple tracks with 3rd rail details, more ballasted mainline trackage, more detailed city scenes and best of all...a 'skydeck' viewing platform to overlook the entire railroad empire!
And also a 'hidden treasure'...possibly the best home-cooked food you will ever eat at a train show. I like the sausage/pepper sandwiches and the kids enjoyed the chicken nuggets!
I always like looking at the harbor scenes...many of the tugboats, barges and freighters were hand-crafted by my father-in-law, the late Mike Fedorochko. He applied his years of Hudson River waterfront knowledge to create a railroad navy in O-gauge. Mickey's handiwork had previously been on display at the NJ State Museum in Trenton, NJ a few years ago...now it is at the NJHiRailers every day.
Visit this fantastic layout during 2010 on these scheduled open houses...The next 2010 show date is: Sunday March 7, 2010. Doors open at 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. There is an admission charge.
The NJ HI-Railers... www.njhirailers.com ...are located at 185 6th Avenue, Paterson, New Jersey 07524 . Phone: 800-225-5360
The O-gauge 3-rail layout features trains, train paraphernalia, memorabilia and other train related items.
Enjoy seeing the locomotive transfer table in action. This is a one of a kind building with not only a perfect operating table, but opening doors on the building. There are many interesting sections of the layout to see, half of the main layout is elevated. Visit a traditional operating steam locomotive turn table and roundhouse, towns, trolleys, eight seperate train main lines, wooden bridges, a building modeled after the Ballantine Brewery, the Esso Oil Refinery, a Power Plant, Train Yard tower and much, much more. You won't be disappointed. So bring the family, the kids, the grandchildren and even bring the neighbors
The Club meets regularly on every Wednesday of the month . The public is invited to visit with open house operating days scheduled throughout the year.
The layout is in three distinct sections: the Southern Division features a large passenger terminal and a four track subway system, the Central Division features five mainlines and numerous crossovers and the Northern Division features a large yard with steam and diesel servicing facilities.
The dimensions of the layout are 185.5 feet in length by an average width of 30 feet. The layout is located on the third floor of a building in a room 250 feet by 50 feet with unobstructed views. The building is an old silk mill hence we named our room Silk City Station.
The “Red” line encircles the whole layout and consists of 420 feet of track that converts to almost 4 scale miles.
A new subway division has been added with trains actually running underneath city streets on the layout. This is a 'must-see' portion of the overall layout!!!
Newest 'subway' addition is a new 'L' elevated 3-track mainline...a true work in progress but it sure looks great already!
As a train hobbyist and grandfather...I would suggest visiting this exceptional model railroad empire.
